We were delighted to receive the Overall Winner Award in Category A – Built Projects – Healthcare Setting for the Orchardville House Dementia Garden, Belfast, at the Irish Landscape Institute Awards 2026.
The awards brought together landscape architects, designers, clients, and colleagues from across Ireland. The strong attendance and impressive standard of entries reflected the talent, creativity, and enthusiasm within the landscape architecture profession.
Congratulations to the Irish Landscape Institute for organising such a successful event and providing an opportunity to recognise and celebrate the work being undertaken across the profession.
Around 15 months after the garden’s completion, it is particularly pleasing to see how the space has become part of everyday life at Orchardville House. The planting has established and matured, providing an evolving seasonal backdrop to a garden enjoyed by residents, their families, and staff.
Perhaps the most rewarding measure of its success is how residents have come to regard it as “our park”. Staff have also shared how familiar planting, including the lavender, provides opportunities for sensory engagement and moments of recognition. These everyday experiences highlight the value of accessible, welcoming outdoor spaces for people living with dementia.
The summer house, raised beds, potting shed and accessible pathways encourage participation, gentle activity, and social interaction, while providing quieter places for relaxation and reflection. The intention throughout was to create a garden that felt welcoming and familiar, rather than institutional, giving residents greater choice and opportunities to enjoy time outdoors.
The project was very much a team effort. Our sincere thanks go to Belfast Health and Social Care Trust, Whittaker & Watt Architects, Beattie Flanigan, Hanna & Hutchinson, Down Developments, WR Jenkins & Co. Ltd, Irwin M&E, Chroma Lighting, Woodscape and Greenleaf Ireland for their contribution in helping bring the garden to life.
It was a great evening, and we were delighted not only to receive the award but also to see the quality of work being recognised across the different categories. Congratulations to everyone who took part, and thanks again to the Irish Landscape Institute for bringing the profession together.
